Environment and Sustainability

Wild Oceans mission is to work closely with our partners to continuously improve fishing practices today and for future generations. We believe sustainability and our environmentally friendly practices are key to our long-term business success.

As a major supplier of seafood for customers around the world, Wild Oceans relies upon the health and sustainability of our ocean resources. This is why we insist on working with legitimate fishermen, who take the initiative in the fishing industry to help in the conservation of healthy, sustainable marine environments, that provide a solid future for their livelihoods.

Wild Oceans recognizes that fishing industries represent one of the most important natural resources that supports economic stability and local community livelihood.
It is our priority that our partners implement management strategies which are responsive to environmental and socio-economic changes. These strategies ensure capture and landings are strictly controlled in support of the environment, sustainability and species protection, whilst considering the entire ecosystem.

In this regard we support such mitigation efforts as;

  • Turtle Exclusive Devices
  • Fish Exclusion Devices
  • Dolphin and sea mammal protections
  • Advanced Net Designs
  • Seal Exclusion Devices
  • Undersize Escape Gaps
  • Energy Efficiencies
  • MSC (Marine Stewardship Council)
  • FIP (Fisheries Improvement Projects)
  • Fully Managed Fisheries
  • Limited Access / Vessel Licenses
  • Restricted Seaons
  • No-Take Marine Reserves (NTMR)
  • Total Fishery Take Limitations / Quotas
  • Minimum Size Restrictions
  • Prohibited Take of Berried Females
  • Biomass Controls
  • By-catch reductions, controls & limits

Fishery Managers worldwide have implemented Management Plans, No-Take Marine Reserves and Fishery Improvement Projects, to bolster the sustainability of fisheries. Fishery Improvement Projects and other initiatives bring together Government Organisations, stakeholders, managers, researchers and funders to improve fishery practices and management.
Wild Oceans constantly strives for new and improved methods for catching, producing and contributing to a ‘future with fish’. We pride ourselves in offering our expert knowledge to our fishermen and production plants.

Fisheries are ecologically sustainable – when stocks of both target and non-target species are not overfished … and when the health, natural balance and productivity of marine ecosystems, populations of threatened, endangered or protected species and marine habitats are maintained. A truly sustainable fishery meets the long-term needs of fishermen, consumers and the environment together.” – Tooni Mahto, Australian Marine Conservation Society.
